Construction of a New Expanded Multi-Use Skate Park Scheduled this Year in Ponoka
Hamilton Skate Park to Remain Open Through Most of the Construction Period
Construction of a new, expanded, multi-use skatepark is scheduled to happen this year in Ponoka. The new expanded facility will be designed for multi-use equipment, including skate boards, bicycles, inline skates and scooters.
The existing Hamilton Skate Park located near the south end of 50 Street will be extended south to include the space currently occupied by the former Town of Ponoka recycling yard. Following extensive public consultation over the past two years on the design of the expanded skate park, the new facility will include the following features:
- A 38-metre long snake run;
- Vert and pyramid ramps;
- Landscaped gathering and seating areas; and
- Lighting.
“This new, expanded facility will be an accessible and attractive space that can be enjoyed by all ability levels and ages,” said Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson. “And the redevelopment of the former recycling yard will greatly improve that area of the downtown corridor,” he added.
Site Preparation Work Began This Week
Work is underway this week as crews prepare the former recycling yard for construction of the expanded multi-use skate park. The existing Hamilton Skate Park will remain open throughout most of the construction but will close for a brief period later this summer as enhancements are made to that section of the facility and it is tied into the new park extension.
Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution around the construction zone which will be fenced to protect the safety of passersby. The new expanded skate park aligns with the Town of Ponoka’s strategic priorities of investing in infrastructure and creating a vibrant community.
