7.1 Municipal Policing Committee Bylaw

Council approved the first, second and third reading of the Municipal Policing Committee Bylaw.

In 2025 the provincial government passed new legislation outlining the requirements for a Provincial Policing Committee, Regional Policing Committees and Municipal Policing Committees. The Town of Ponoka fell into the category to join a Regional Policing Committee.

To maintain a Municipal Policing Committee in Ponoka, a request was submitted to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services. Following ministerial approval exempting the Town of Ponoka from joining the Central Alberta Regional Policing Committee and to maintain a Municipal Policing Committee, the Municipal Policing Committee Bylaw was created.

The Municipal Policing Committee will supersede the Police Advisory Committee and will:

  • Oversee the municipal police service agreement between the Town of Ponoka and the Government of Canada for the services of the RCMP;
  • Represent the interests and concerns of the public and Council to the Officer in Charge;
  • Developing a yearly plan of priorities and strategies for policing in consultation with the Officer in Charge;
  • Develop a community safety plan in conjunction with the local police detachment and chief elected official including a plan for collaboration between the community and community agencies, and providing the community safety plan annually, or on request, to the Minister; and
  • Report annually or on request, to the Minister on the implementation of and updates to programs and services to achieve the priorities of the Police Service.

7.3 Bowl for Kids

Council approved the sponsorship request for the 2026 Bowl for Kids event on Friday, March 6 by entering a bowling team at a cost of $500 to be funded from Council’s sponsorship budget.

The Bowls for Kids is an annual fundraiser hosted by BGC Wolf Creek to raise funds for mentoring programs for local youth.

10.1 Parkland Airshed Management Zone

A letter was sent inviting the Town of Ponoka to be a member of the Parkland Airshed Management Zone. The Parkland Airshed Management Zone is a multi-stakeholder non-profit organization that was formed in 1997 to monitor and address air quality issues within the west central region of Alberta.
