Town of Ponoka Celebrates Recreation and Parks Month in June

June is Recreation and Parks Month PosterThroughout the month of June, the Town of Ponoka is excited to celebrate Recreation and Parks Month, a provincewide initiative that promotes outdoor play, local parks and community connection through recreation.

“Recreation and Parks Month supports community health, encourages outdoor recreation and raises awareness of the many parks and green spaces Ponoka has to offer,” said Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities.

This year’s theme is ‘get outside and play.’ The Town of Ponoka is inviting citizens to participate in a variety of activities throughout the month aimed at encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and exploring local parks and green spaces. This includes:

Week 1: June 1-7 – Your Favourite Park and Green Space

Citizens are encouraged to visit their favourite local park or green space and share their outdoor experience by taking a photo and posting it on social media for a chance to win a grand prize.

Week 2: June 8-14 – Celebrate Outdoors

Two community events will be held this week to bring the people together for some outdoor fun:

  • Spring Festival on Friday, June 13 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Lions Centennial Park. This free event offers fun-filled activities and entertainment for the whole family. 
  • Disc Golf Grand Opening on Saturday, June 14 from 12 to 2 p.m. at Riverside Rotary Park. The grand opening celebration will include a free barbecue, tips and tricks on how to play disc golf, a ribbon cutting ceremony and Coffee with Council. Stay tuned for more details.

Week 3: June 15-21 – Try-It and Trails

This week promotes experiencing new recreation activities, including a variety of drop-in programming options at the Ponoka Arena Complex, as well as walking and biking in the Battle River Valley. 

Week 4: June 22-30 – Play in the Park

Families are encouraged to enjoy local playgrounds, parks, and green spaces. You're also invited to share a photo of your family enjoying one of these outdoor spaces on social media for a chance to win.

Enter to Win a Grand Prize

Simply post photos to social media of you participating in any of the various activities throughout the month, tag the Town of Ponoka @TownofPonoka, and use the hashtag #JRPMPonoka. You will then automatically be entered to win a one-month family recreation pass. The family recreation pass offers access to all drop-in programming at the Ponoka Aquaplex and Arena Complex.
