Citizens Invited to Offer Input on Proposed Design for New Civic Plaza in Downtown Ponoka

Civic Plaza Conceptual Design

Ponoka citizens are invited to stop by the Town’s booth at the Ponoka Trade Show on April 11 and 12 to offer their input and ideas on a conceptual design for a new Civic Plaza in downtown Ponoka.

Citizens will have the opportunity to learn about the project, watch a video showcasing the Civic Plaza design and provide feedback via a survey.

Take the Survey

If you are unable to attend the Ponoka Trade Show, you can also watch the video and provide input online at LetsTalkPonoka.ca. The Civic Plaza survey only takes a few minutes to complete and public engagement will remain open until Sunday, June 1.

Paper copies of the survey are also available at the Ponoka Aquaplex (5315 46 Avenue), Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 54 Street) and the Town Office on the second floor of the Ponoka Civic Centre (#200 5604 50 Street).

“There has been a lot of interest expressed by Ponoka citizens over the years for a community gathering space in downtown Ponoka,” said Town of Ponoka Chief Administrative Officer Sandra Lund. “We are excited to launch the design process for the proposed Civic Plaza and to invite community input on this project.”

New Civic Plaza in Downtown Ponoka

The Civic Plaza will be a multi-use public space next the Ponoka Legion and across from the Alberta Provincial Courts building (5102 48 Avenue). The current conceptual design for the new Civic Plaza includes the following features:

  • Water fountains;
  • Landscaped gathering and seating areas with benches and picnic tables;
  • Public washrooms;
  • Bike racks;
  • Greenspace;
  • Lighting; and
  • Waste receptacles.

The Civic Plaza will be easily accessible by motorists and pedestrians. Whether you’re attending an outdoor concert, enjoying a quiet afternoon on the green space or engaging in community events, the Civic Plaza will be a welcoming space to connect with others and the community.

Design Development Process

Once public input is gathered on the conceptual design, the Town of Ponoka will create a more detailed design based on the input received.

Construction of the new Civic Plaza will depend on future consideration and approval of the facility design, location and budget by Town Council.

The proposed Civic Plaza aligns with Council’s strategic priorities of investing in Town infrastructure and building a vibrant community. The development of a proposed Civic Plaza is based on recommendations in the Town of Ponoka’s Downtown Action Plan.
