Town of Ponoka Council Highlights for February 25, 2025

5. Public Forum

A local business owner asked if the Town could partner with businesses, possibly through the Chamber of Commerce, to help make businesses easier to find through signage in Ponoka.

They also asked if the Town had applied for or intends to apply for federal funding that is available for housing related to changing municipal bylaws around the number of units allowed in residentially zoned areas.

6.1 Cyber Investigation Report

Council accepted the Cyber Investigation Report for information. The report provides the final results of the cyber incident investigation and notification efforts to affected individuals following an incident on February 20, 2024 when the Town learned that an unauthorized third party gained access to a portion of the Town’s network environment.

7.1 Renaming 51 Avenue Parking Lot

A motion was brought forward by Mayor Ferguson to consider renaming the parking lot on 51 Avenue to ‘Dillon Square’ in recognition of the many contributions to the Town and community by former Councillor, Fire Chief and resident Ted Dillon. Council also asked Administration to bring back additional areas in Town that could potentially be renamed after Councillor Dillon instead of the parking lot on 51 Avenue. Council also requested that criteria be developed for considering future naming requests.

7.2  Surplus Lands List Update

Council approved the Town’s Surplus Lands List to reflect the surplus lands currently available for sale, which now include:

  1. 5501 50 Street (Lot 15, Block E, Plan RN7C) with a sale price of $20,000 
  2. 5503 50 Street (Lot 16, Block E, Plan RN7C) with a sale price of $20,000
  3. 5406 55 Street (Lot 3, Block 41, Plan 1544HW) with a sale price of $78,000
  4. Southerly 1.5 acres of 5015 46 Avenue (Block 1, Plan 862 1472) with a sale price of $225,000

7.6 Ponoka Area Minor Football Association 2025 Sponsorship

Council approved a $650 Hoodie Sponsorship to the Ponoka Area Minor Football Association for the 2025 season, funded from the Council Advertising Budget.

7.7 Letter of Support – Climate Ready Plan Application

Council accepted the report as information and formally supported the Town of Ponoka’s application for grant funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to develop Climate Ready Plans and Processes. The report stated that the Town of Ponoka’s Climate Ready Plans will be a crucial step in preparing our community for the challenges of climate change. By formally supporting these efforts, Council is helping to ensure that Ponoka is better prepared for future climate-related impacts, while also demonstrating leadership in sustainability and resilience. The plan is also key for other future significant grant applications that the Town may pursue for funding.

10. Correspondence Items

The following correspondence items were received by Council:

  • RCMP Quarter 3 Stats and Community Policing Report from the Ponoka Detachment.
  • A Letter from the Minister of Municipal Affairs about Joint Use Planning Agreements between municipalities and school boards.
  • A Letter from Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services, the Honorable Mike Ellis, confirming that the Town of Ponoka Community Peace Officer works in close cooperation with the RCMP and will continue to do so. This letter was written in response to an earlier letter received from Minister Ellis.
  • A Letter from Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson to the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, the Honorable Dan Williams, regarding the cancellation of the Ponoka Rising Sun Clubhouse contract.
  • A Letter from MP Blaine Calkins congratulating Town of Ponoka Manager of Protective Services Stuart Larson on receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of his extraordinary dedication, exemplary service and significant contributions in both the military and to the communities he has served throughout his career in fire services and protective services, including the Town of Ponoka.
