Town of Ponoka Council Highlights for March 11, 2025

7.1 Ponoka & District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards
Council approved a motion directing Administration to develop bound certificates for the Ponoka & District Chamber of Commerce Business Award winners recognizing their achievements, for presentation by the Mayor or designate at the annual award ceremonies.
7.2 Request for Ministerial Approval to Maintain a Municipal Policing Committee
Council approved a motion directing Administration to prepare a letter for the Mayor’s signature to Minister Ellis, Public Safety and Emergency Services, requesting ministerial approval for the Town of Ponoka to be exempt from Joining a Regional Policing Committee and maintain a local Municipal Policing Committee to best serve the community of Ponoka.
This follows changes to the Police Amendment Act that require every community in Alberta served by the RCMP to be represented by either a local or regional Policing Committee, or by the Provincial Police Advisory Board, depending on the municipality’s population.
As a community with a population of less than 15,000, the Town of Ponoka is required to participate in a Regional Policing Committee with other municipalities of a similar size, or the Town can, subject to ministerial approval, establish their own municipal committee or a joint committee with another municipality.
7.3 Community Peace Officer Program - February
Council accepted for information the Community Peace Officer Program Report for February 2025 which included summary of the total number of bylaw infractions reported and detailed breakdowns of the types of violations encountered.
10. Correspondence Items
The following correspondence items were received by Council:
- A letter from the Minister of Municipal Affairs about the recently passed Provincial Priorities Act to establish a process for provincial oversight of agreements between provincial entities (including municipalities) and the federal government.
- A Letter from the Minister of Municipal Affairs about the 2025 provincial budget and the funding that it includes for municipalities.

12. Notices of Motion
Councillor David brought forward a Notice of Motion for Council’s consideration asking Administration to look into the feasibility of the Town partnering with, or offering small businesses registered with the Town, opportunity for promotion, advertising or wayfinding options or in creating advertising awareness for businesses in Ponoka.
13. Closed Session
Following the Closed Session, Council approved a motion authorizing the hiring of a second Community Peace Officer for the Town of Ponoka.
