Waste Transfer Station

Location: Northeast of the corporate limits on 46 Street. In Ponoka County on Township Road 431A. The rural blue sign reads 252028 TWP RD 431A. The legal land location is SE Quarter of Section 10, Township 43, Range 25, West of the 4th Meridian.

Accepted Items at the Waste Transfer Station

The Ponoka Waste Transfer Station collects a large variety of items for disposal and recycling, including:

Asphalt
Box springs and mattresses
Compostable yard materials
Concrete
Electronics
Fluorescent light bulbs
Household batteries
Household hazardous waste
Metal (general scrap, cable and wire)
Oil containers and filters
Propane tanks
Recyclable items
Rubble (if from a fire it must be clean and separated)
Solid waste (garbage, furniture, drywall, toilets, shingles)
Vehicle tires without rims
Bicycle tires without inner tubes
Used oil
Used tires
Vehicle batteries
White goods (freezers, refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, washers and dryers)
Wood (treated, painted, and/or stained wood, as well as particle board; must be cut into five-foot-long and three-foot-wide pieces and placed in the blue building at the Waste Transfer Station)

Not Accepted Items at the Waste Transfer Station

The Ponoka Waste Transfer Station does not accept the following items and materials:

Agricultural herbicide and pesticide containers
Asbestos insulation
Ashes
Automobiles and other large metal objects
Bulk liquids and wastes with free liquid
Dead animals (including hides and carcasses)
Demolition debris
Fire extinguishers
Hydrocarbon contaminated earth
Industrial waste
Manure
Radioactive waste
Sulfurous waste and/or soil
Items for disposal at the regional landfill that are greater than 8 feet long

Composting at the Waste Transfer Station

The Waste Transfer Station accepts loads of compostable yard waste (branches, trees, grass clippings, sod and plant debris) free of charge.

If yard waste is bagged and is brought to the Waste Transfer Station, citizens must open the bags and empty the contents that are inside onto the Town’s organics pile. No bags (even compostable) can be placed on the Town’s organic pile.

Compostable yard waste can also be taken to the Waste Transfer Station in:

Truck or trailer beds that can be shoveled into the compost pile; and
Any other container aside from your green cart or grey cart that can be emptied into the Town's compost pile.

Please note: The Town's Waste Transfer Station does not accept kitchen waste for its compost pile as the facility is not set up to compost that type of material. Kitchen waste can only be composted through the curbside green cart program where the waste is transported to an approved composting site.

Green and Grey Carts

Citizens are asked not to use grey carts or green carts to transport yard waste to the Waste Transfer Station. The grey and green carts pose a risk of contamination due to household waste and other organic matter.

There will be a charge for compost taken to the Waste Transfer Station in a green or grey cart. The carts must be emptied in the garbage building.

Charges by Weight at the Waste Transfer Station

Items brought to the Waste Transfer Station for disposal are charged by weight, therefore all vehicles must weigh in on the scale when entering and weigh out on the scale when leaving. The minimum charge at the Waste Transfer Station is $8 per load (up to 100 kg).
